Seamus Mallon was a founder member of the Social Democratic and Labour Party (SDLP) which grew out of the civil rights movement in Northern Ireland in the 1960s. His political career spanned over 30 years, from local government to Westminster and finally to Stormont as Deputy First Minister of Northern Ireland.
