Democracy at stake
by Michael O’Neill
MICHAEL O’NEILL writes from Florida on the impact of Trump’s presidency.
Unless some kind of cataclysm stops them, Donald Trump, his major campaign contributor Elon Musk, subservient Republicans in the House and Senate of Congress, and the Trump-MAGA cultists will destroy American democracy. And, in the process, the lives of countless people in this country and around the world. In less than five months, they have already destroyed innocent lives in Africa and elsewhere who depend on USAID (the US Agency for International Development) for their daily bread.
USAID was the first casualty of Trump giving Musk and his young techie hoodlums free rein to destroy the agencies of government, sacking civil servants and taking over the computers. It didn’t matter that it was illegal; Trump had already got away with an attempted coup.
He was emboldened by his re-election, his escape from prison, and knowing that his fascist followers in Washington DC ‘think tanks’ like the Heritage Foundation had prepared the blueprint for his second term. He denies knowing anything about ‘Project 2025’ and has signed ‘executive orders’ for his intended imperial presidency with no regard to the legislative and judicial branches of government.
