I have just read two books that have nothing to do with the Catholic Church. At least one of the authors is an atheist, possibly both, yet each finishes by praising Pope Francis. One calls him ‘the most convincing and influential public intellectual today’; and the other ‘the only public personality endowed with significant authority on a world scale who has enough courage and determination to confront with open eyes the problems facing today’s world]’. The authors are two well-known commentators on contemporary society.
