Lindsay Paterson, Professor of Education Policy and Research at the University of Edinburgh, delivered a fascinating account of the place of ethics in educational provision and research in Scotland at January’s Newman meeting in Glasgow. In a wide ranging and comprehensive talk, he argued that the Curriculum for Excellence, which forms the basis for teaching in Scotland’s schools today, is long on the process of learning but short on the knowledge needed to underpin it. Good teachers save the day.
