First Supper
by Bernie Morran
Who is this Jesus that we meet at the wedding?
Fashioned through aeons, before birth in the flesh
30 years more, newly born in the spirit,
He is barely an infant in the school of God’s love
It is Mary, his mother, the more advanced student,
Who is deeply familiar with God’s crazy ways.
Taught first by Gabriel, then cousin Elizabeth,
It is in marriage with Joseph she has known love most full
So at the wedding, Mary cares for the couple
Concerned that their covenant be rich with God’s wine
Living the joy that their love holds and promises
Wine is essential, and God will provide.
It’s to Jesus she turns, now her nearest and dearest
But he hasn’t yet learned just how full God’s love is.
Mary has to direct him, and Jesus submits
As he did years before, lost and found as a boy.
Still, he’s embarrassed, for he sees only water
And how will his followers respond to him now?
He feels like a fool, little knowing this is God’s way
Till a voice sounds again, Abba’s voice, “Son, I love you”.
He turns to the servants, he tells them to fill full
The water jars destined to hold the best wine.
And lo and behold, there is wine in abundance.
And Mary smiles quietly. She loves her dear son.
