Synod 2021-24 :The journey continues
by Mary Cullen
‘Synodality is an expression of the Church’s nature, her form, style and mission’
Pope Francis
The report of the first session of the Synod on Synodality, held in Rome in October 2023, underlines the historical significance of the synodal journey Pope Francis set in motion. The report, which provides a synthesis of contributions made at the October meeting, places synodality within the tradition of the church and the reception of Vatican II. It states:
‘The Second Vatican Council was… like a seed sown in the field of the world and the Church. The soil in which it germinated and grew was the daily lives of believers, the experience of the Churches of every people and culture, the many testimonies of holiness, and the reflections of theologians.
‘Synod 2021-24 continues to draw on the energy of that seed and develop its potential… it values the contribution all the baptised make, according to their respective vocations, in helping us understand better and practice the Gospel. In this sense it constitutes a true act of further reception of the Council, prolonging its inspiration and reinvigorating its prophetic force for today’s world‘.
The report offers a synthesis of the discussions that took place at the October meeting of the Synod. It lists 20 topics, including the role of women and the laity, the ministry of bishops, priests and deacons, concern for the poor and migrants, and the need to listen to all, including victims of abuse.

Next phase
The next phase of the journey, in preparation for October’s Synod meeting in Rome this year, has already begun. Dioceses around the world are being invited once again to gather together local groups and organisations, this time to deepen their understanding of synodality by reflecting together on issues which are important to them. Local churches are also being asked to continue with training and listening sessions and reach out to those who have not been involved int the process so far. The focus on the coming months is on how we can grow as a synodal church.
